RESEARCH

Research

The NSI promotes research in Numismatic and allied disciplines in various manners. It organizes Annual Conferences on the different subject where the scholars/researcher presents their finding in front of the experts in the discipline. These conferences present the development in the discipline of any year. Further, the NSI has also had an active publication program since its inception in 1910.  The Society has also published many academic works including the notable series. Along with that it also promotes the study of coins through scientific methods and digitization. It also recognizes the best research undertaken in the field by awarding the researchers. It has also planned to organize training workshops and Annual lecture series in the name of renowned scholars.

Annual Conference:

NSI organizes its annual conference almost every year, which are held across different parts of the country. It has been the major activity of the society since its inception in 1910. Initially, it took place mostly at the residence of an office-bearer or jointly with other societies. Since 1972, we started our meetings independently. It has been an event unique to its kind where scholars/researchers/ coin dealers from India and abroad join their hands in the benefits of the numismatic discipline. In the early days, coins were exhibited and discussed in the annual meetings. In 1920, for the first time, paper reading was introduced; however, it would become a regular feature only in or about 1944. Now the paper reading forms the main item of the Annual Meets.

Society elects a president every year to deliver a Presidential address to these conferences. Along with that society also invites scholars to present their new findings (s). This is a forum of debate among all to find a conclusive result on any theme. The society also chooses the subject to host the conference. The findings of the conference take place in the Journal of the Numismatic Society of India. Thus, the conference presents the development in the subject of any year. As of now altogether 102 annual conferences have been held across the country. The Centennial of the society was organized in London.

Lecture Series:

The NSI plans wants to come up with an NSI lecture series, as an opportunity to invite scholars who could talk to the Numismatics fraternity on subjects of broad interest. This will be a forum for the researcher, museum curator, coin dealer, scholar (s) to learn from the eminent historians, policymakers, technologists, and leading thinkers to spark transformative ideas for our shared history and future.

Publication:

The NSI has vast experience of publishing path breaking researches on the various themes of numismatic. Under the different series like Numismatic Notes and Monograph, Memoirs, Bibliography, etc society has published more than three dozen monographs and researches. In addition with that 81 Volumes of the Journal of Numismatic Society of India has been also published since 1939. These publications are a guiding lamp for any who is working in the field of numismatic studies. The details of it are mentioned elsewhere on the website.

Training:

The society proposes to trained research scholars/ students/coin dealers in the study of coins and related objects, which includes identification of coins, decipherment, and their antic value. This training programme will immensely help in the development of basic ideas of the discipline.

Documentary Films:

In 1961, the society persuaded the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India, to release a documentary film on Indian Coins on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the society. Accordingly, the Film Division of said ministry produced a documentary film under the title ‘Romance of India Coins’. Dr. P. L. Gupta, on behalf of the society, was associated with the film division as Advisor. The film was released on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the Society and it won President of India’s Merit Certificate.

Scientific Study and digitalization:

A well-equipped Numismatic Laboratory is the need of the hour. In India, we have no institution with a full-fledged numismatic laboratory facility. It is important to note that more than 90% of the available numismatic data still needs to be utilized in writing the new history of India. These materials are lying either in the personal collection or in the central and state departments/museums.  Understanding the internal and external features of numismatic data requires lots of professionalism. It also requires some scientific assessment which can only be possible in a well-established laboratory. Society has established a small laboratory in the building of NSI to cater to the needs of its members with the help of GoI. However, it is unable to meet out the new challenges due to paucity of funds. Thus, NSI wants to come up with a state of art scientific laboratory to promote the history of India and also to provide fresh and original information on Numismatic Data.
